This game doesn’t just give you a fantastic plot, it gives you a story that tugs at your heartstrings. Part of what makes it such a fantastic experience is the emotional side. While Spiritfarer isn’t my number one favorite game, it’s easily top 10, and that’s saying something considering how many I play. Being in that world makes me feel so at home, it’s such an immersive escape from reality. I never get tired of exploring the many islands or interacting with the delightful characters. These last moments are very impactful, with the spirits looking back on their journey, coming to accept their situation, and leaving you with some lasting words of wisdom.Even though you can fully complete Spiritfarer in around 40 hours, I’ve put more than double that into the game because I love it so much. When it's time, you're tasked with taking each spirit on one last journey to the Everdoor where they can finally pass on. In many ways, playing as Stella you're taking on the role of a palliative care worker, looking after your charges and making sure that their last moments are as comfortable as they can be. Each spirit has a different personality, likes and dislikes. You talk to each one and learn about their lives This is what's at the heart of this game and what really what makes it special. Time spent with the spirits is enjoyable too. The gameplay is varied and engaging as new mechanics and crafting options open up to you as you progress through the story. It doesn't take long after meeting the first spirit you encounter, Gwen, for this connection to set in – and when it is time to say goodbye, it makes it all the harder. What these tasks are depend on the individual spirit's backstory but include things like talking to particular people, building a specific room or upgrade on the boat or collect resources for them.Ī large part of the game is getting to know each spirit, and keeping them happy with chatting, food and the occasional hug. Whenever you meet a new spirit, they join you on the boat and give you various tasks to complete. To accomplish this task, and accompanied by Stella's pet cat Daffodil, you travel by boat between various islands. The game begins as you take on the role of Stella, the new 'Spiritfarer' who is tasked with taking the spirits of people who have died through to the afterlife. Released last August by Canadian developers Thunder Lotus, Spiritfarer is as much about where we've been and what we leave behind as it is about where we're going.
